For Future Consideration - Upper School Teaching Faculty

DESCRIPTION

 

Upper School faculty members teach a standard load of five classes, typically with two or three preps. In addition to teaching, faculty may be assigned a study hall to proctor each semester. All faculty members have an advisory group, which they advise through the students' senior year before beginning with a new group. Teachers are expected to be involved in co-curricular activities, whether in athletics, the arts, or service learning.

Responsibilities:

  • Learning Environment
    • Create a classroom environment that is favorable to learning and personal growth.
    • Establish positive and effective rapport with students.
    • Motivate students to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for lifelong learning.
    • Establish good communication and relationships with parents.
    • Collaborate with co-workers for the purpose of improving the overall quality of instruction and student learning.
  • Teaching and Instruction
    • Utilize both direct instruction and student-led activities to teach the curriculum while focusing on students’ learning more than mere coverage of material.
    • Provide individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student.
    • Administer a variety of assessment tools and evaluate assessments to drive instructional techniques.
    • Maintain appropriate records.
    • Communicate student progress in a timely manner through progress reports, report cards, and parent communication.
    • Identify student needs and collaborate with other staff members in assessing and helping students.
  • Professional Learning
    • Stay abreast of developments within the faculty member’s discipline.
    • Attend workshops and conferences within the discipline as well as conferences dedicated to pedagogy and learning.
    • Participate in a variety of meetings and professional development on campus.
    • Serve on various committees to ensure functionality of the school (Vertical Teams, Committees, etc.)
  • Advisory
    • All faculty members serve as advisors, meeting with a group of 8-11 students for 20-25 minutes four times per week.
    • Advisors attend all class meetings and class retreats for their classes, serving as chaperones and added adult support for the grade chairs.

 POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in education or related field, Master's degree preferred
  • Experience in teaching upper school
  • Experience with current software, current hardware, and computer applications
  • Demonstrates a passion for and expertise in the teaching
  • Eagerness to research and learn new technologies and bring them into the classroom
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Collaborative personality
